TRIP DESCRIPTION

Colombia has become one of the hottest birding destinations in the world in recent years. We have made the best arrangements to capture some very special endemics and near-endemics in this Andean Paradise. Read below to know more...

Upon arrival one of our representatives will receive you from the airport and drop you at our reserved hotel. Dinner is not included on this day.

Day 2, 3 – Manizales

From here we’ll travel about 2 hours up into the mountains high above the city to a remote and beautiful lodge with thermal baths – it’s nice to soak in the pools after a day of travel! We’ll spend 2 nights here.

Our main targets in the next 2 days will be: Golden-breasted and Black-thighed Pufflegs, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Shining Sunbeam, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Great Sapphirewing, Tourmaline Sunangel, Mountain Velvetbreast, Viridian Metaltail, Tyrian Metaltail, and Sparkling Violetear. Other species include Lacrimose and Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanagers, Glossy Flowerpiercer and many more species.

Day 4,5 – Rio Blanco

After breakfast on our 4th day morning we will drive 2.5 hrs to reach Rio Blanco which is famous among birders for its antpitta feeders. Possible species - Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Brown-banded Antpitta. Slate-crowned Antpitta is a bit harder due to its small size and nervous habits. More luck is needed for Bicolored and Chestnut-naped Antpittas, which are more sporadic.

Hummer feeders by the lodge are good for both multi-flash as well as getting clean shots of perched birds, and possibilities include Long-tailed Sylph, Bronzy and Collared Incas, Tourmaline Sunangel, Lesser (Green) Violetear, Sparkling Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Buff-tailed Coronet, White-bellied Woodstar, and Booted Racket-tail. The fruit feeders attract a few species such as Blue-winged Mountain- Tanager and several other beautiful highland tanagers.

Day 6,7,8 – Rio Bitaco forest reserve

On the morning of our 6th day we will drive a few hours to reach our secluded lodge in the middle of a cloud forest which is nothing short of spectacular. This is one of the highlights of our trip where we will photograph the much-anticipated tanagers and hummingbirds like the endemic multi colored tanager, saffron crowned tanager, long tailed sylph, brown violetear, flame rumped tanager and many other species.

Based on weather we will make afternoon walks at a private farm to look for the cock of the rock lek. This is an optional opportunity for ones who are willing to make the walk. Others can choose to stay and photograph at the lodge.

On one of the mornings based on the weather we will visit a feeder 1 hour away to photograph some amazing species like the crimson rumped toucanet, toucan barbet, green thorntail and many other species of birds.
