SOAT Insurance & Damage Coverage

What is SOAT insurance and what does it cover?

Learn the essentials of Colombian mandatory motorcycle insurance and how we’ve got you covered on tour.

We take every step possible to protect you, your passenger, and your ride from the unexpected. Every rental includes two layers of medical protection plus the option to add protection for the motorcycle itself:

  1. 🩺 SOAT – Colombia’s mandatory road-traffic medical insurance for accident-related injuries.

  2. 🚑 Secondary Medical Insurance – Extra medical coverage that activates if SOAT limits are reached (extremely rare).

  3. 🛡 Optional Full Damage Coverage (0 deductible) – Protects the rental motorcycle from accidental damage, theft, or total loss.

🩺 SOAT – What it is and what it covers

SOAT stands for Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito (Mandatory Traffic Accident Insurance).

It’s required by law for all vehicles in Colombia and guarantees immediate medical care for anyone injured in a traffic accident—whether it’s you, your passenger, pedestrians, or other drivers.

What SOAT pays for:

  • 🚑 Immediate emergency care and stabilization

  • 🏥 Hospitalization and surgery when needed

  • 💊 Medications and medical supplies (orthotics/prosthetics when prescribed)

  • 🔎 Diagnostic tests and prescribed treatments

  • ♿ Rehabilitation/therapy to support recovery

  • 💼 Partial compensation for lost income if injuries keep you from working

  • ⚰️ Disability, death, and funeral benefits

  • 🚐 Medically necessary patient transport

  • What SOAT does not cover:

  • 🏍 Motorcycle or property damage

  • 🧳 Luggage, gear, phones, or cameras

  • 🧭 Trip interruption costs

🚑 Secondary Medical Insurance (SOAT backup)

  • This separate policy activates only after SOAT benefits are fully used—a very rare scenario. It ensures medically necessary care continues without interruption.

  • What it can help with:

  • ➕ Additional emergency/hospital care, diagnostics, medications, rehab/therapy

  • ➕ Certain assistance benefits (e.g., medical transport)

  • How it works:

  • SOAT is billed first. If SOAT reaches its limit, our team and the assistance provider activate the secondary policy so there’s no treatment gap.

🛡 Optional Upgrade: Full Damage Coverage (0 deductible)

  • Our most popular add-on for complete peace of mind. This covers all accidental damage to the rental motorcycle, including:

  • Falls, tip-overs, or low-speed drops

  • Scratches, dents, or broken body panels

  • Damaged mirrors, brake levers, clutch levers, or lights

  • Total loss from a major accident

  • Theft of the motorcycle

  • ✅ Zero deductible – you pay nothing for covered events

  • ✅ Deposit protection – no repair bills on covered claims

  • 📄 Clear exclusions – not valid for intentional misuse, racing, or riding under the influence

If something happens

  • ⛑️ Safety first: Move to a safe area and call 123 (Colombia’s emergency number)

  • 📞 Call us immediately: We coordinate medical help, towing, and next steps

  • 🧾 Keep documents: SOAT and bike papers are in the top box. Save any medical/towing paperwork—our team helps with the claims process

Common Questions

Does SOAT cover me as the rider?
✅ Yes—SOAT is medical coverage for anyone injured in a traffic accident, including you.

What if SOAT runs out?
🧩 Our secondary medical insurance takes over so necessary treatment continues.

Does insurance fix the bike?
❌ No. Medical policies don’t repair vehicles. Choose Full Damage Coverage (0 deductible) if you want the motorcycle covered for accidental damage.
