RIDE DESCRIPTION
Experience the Colombian rainforest right from the heart of the city with this 1 day motorbike tour from Medellin to beautiful Rio Claro. Located just a three-hour motorbike ride from the city lies a tropical nature reserve, that has yet to make it into the guidebooks. A unique natural eco-park, popular with Colombians, that offers a unique collection of accommodations and activities all set within a protected rainforest. Rio Claro’s prerogative is to preserve a pristine example of Colombia’s rare biodiversity that is being threatened year by year by deforestation. For those wanting to escape the heat and smog of the city, this is the essential scenic getaway.
What to Expect?
Located around 94 miles southeast of Medellín, the reserve sits atop the primitive remains of a coral reef; a marble canyon with crystal clear water meandering through, offering deep caverns, stalactites and stalagmites hidden within.
For nature enthusiasts, the Rio Claro reserve is an absolute must. Spy wild monkeys from your jungle cabin. Spot parrots, herons and an abundance of Colombia’s indigenous bird population singing sweetly in the trees. Tropical fish can be found in the sparkling river below and plenty of curious insects appear by nightfall. The eco-reserve boasts a range of activities suitable for all ages and abilities. Choose from kayaking, caving and river tubing, zip lining, or simply take a dip in the crystal clear water and bask in the sunshine. Depending on your party size choose from luxury cabins that open out into the jungle, or for larger groups there are chalet and camping options. It probably goes without saying that Rio Claro has limited wifi and phone reception, so it’s a great opportunity to go off grid!
ROUTE MAPS & NOTES
IS COLOMBIA SAFE?
The answer is a resounding YES. Colombia is exactly the opposite of what Netflix Narcos series portrays. People have to realize that Pablo Escobar was killed three decades ago. We've led hundreds of tours around the country and have never had any problems with security.
Anthony Bourdain summed it up perfectly:
"If you want to find bad people in Colombia, you can surely find them, as you could in New York or Los Angeles. But nowhere have my crew and I been treated better or with more kindness and generosity. I'd bring my family on vacation there in a heartbeat. And hope to soon. As I said before: Colombians are proud. Let them show you what they are proud of."
ITINERARY
Leave Medellin in your rearview as we set off southbound out of the city. The countryside welcomes you with sweeping vistas across the valley as we pass.
We’ll stop off en route for plenty of photo opportunities as we wind our way out through the valley.
Welcome to the jungle! In the main building alongside reception, you can find the onsite restaurant where serve simple, but tasty, Colombian dishes are served.
With tours booked we can now check into our accommodation and spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. With plentiful walks, head upstream to explore the exotic flora and fauna, or kick your shoes off and relax in the refreshing natural pools.
Meals are served within 2 hour time slots, three times a day. There’s no other food available on the site, so it is advised not to miss a meal!
Your time will be yours to spend as you wish. Venture off-site on booked activities, lounge around the lazy river or explore the surrounding jungle on foot in search of monkeys!
Ride back from Rio Claro in the late afternoon, returning to Medellin by evening and maybe even catch a dazzling sunset on the way.
